FileCheckMD5 screenshotI programmed FileCheckMD5 to fill a specific need I had. There are plenty of MD5, SHA, etc file integrity scanners out there, but none of them did exactly what I wanted. It only took me a day to put together so I am making it freely available to anyone else who might need it.

I needed a Windows utility that would let me specify a folder to scan recursively, save MD5 checksums, and then be able to test those same checksums against those files at a future date. The idea is to have this on the root folder of a CD-ROM so that the disc can be tested for defects, giving a definitive answer to the “is it just my computer” question when someone runs into a problem with their CD.

The MD5 hash routine is nearly impossible to fool intentionally (meaning if you alter a file, there is basically no way you can make the MD5 checksum of that file the same as it was before)… and a scratch on a CD will certainly not fool the routine. So if the file is damaged or changed, FileCheckMD5 will let you know when you test it.

Anyhow, instructions on using FileCheckMD5 are included in the zip file. There is no installer, just put it where you need it and use it. It’s not a very refined user interface, but it works for me. Please note that FileCheckMD5 was designed specifically for my needs and has not been tested on a wide variety of platforms or situations. You are welcome to use it (it’s totally free of charge), but is provided AS IS.

If you have read this far and don’t know what this program is for, chances are you have no need for it. :-)

New: As of version 0.2.1.10, FileCheckMD5 will automatically start testing files on startup if a FileCheckMD5 MD5 sums file is found in the same directory as the executable. The primary reason I wrote FileCheckMD5 is for my own use on CD-ROMs I produce for retail sale, so adding this automation makes it easier for less experienced end users to test their CD since now it’s just a simple double-click on the FileCheckMD5.exe file instead of them having to load the checkfile into the program manually.

Again, this is a free program (no, not free as in speech). I sell software too. Have a look-see:
