People don’t seem to realize this very often: allowing the government to control education is inconsistent with living in an individualistic and free society.

Case in point: A Judge rules that school administrators can take punitive actions against students for things they write outside of school.

U.S. District Court Judge Mark Kravitz denied Avery Doninger’s request for a temporary injunction to overturn her high school election results Friday, but the Burlington teenager isn’t giving up her fight.

Doninger alleges Lewis S. Mills High School Principal Karissa Niehoff and Region 10 Superintendent Paula Schwartz violated her First Amendment right to free speech when they banned her from running for Class of 2008 secretary after she posted an offensive reference to school officials on a blog site from her home computer.

If public schools are a function of the government, what does punishing students for things they say against it, on personal blogs, teach about free speech?

Is it any wonder that each American generation seems more willing to give up responsibilities to the government? Why not? They are trained to sit down, shut up, and do as they’re told. And if they speak out against the agents overseeing their daily training, there will be consequences.

I’ve set up a new forum for homeschoolers to use to share ideas, ask questions, and chat away in: the meh-sc.org Homeschooling Forum. If you’re a home schooler (and particularly if you do so from a Christian worldview), please do come by. Over time, I hope it will evolve into a very useful resource, but it will take participation from lots of people to make it happen.

meh-sc.org is really something being built on the work and past involvement of a group of Christian home schoolers from a usenet group. Many of the regulars are already there.

“The exercise will simulate an attack by a fictitious radical group called Wackos Against Schools and Education who believe everyone should be homeschooled. Under the scenario, a bomb is placed on the bus and is detonated while the bus is traveling on Durham, causing the bus to land on its side and fill with smoke.”

What a great way to spend tax dollars — drills that make homeschoolers out to be terrorists. How politically correct. They wouldn’t want to do something too realistic, like Islamo-fascists bombing a bus!

Our society worships education.

I just watched a segment on Fox News about a father who refused to let his son work on the family farm. The son really likes farming, and wants to farm, just like his dad. But the father has forbidden his son from pursuing the same career and has required him to go to college, making him find other work.

This is stupid. There is nothing wrong with farming as a career. We all rely on farmers and someone has to farm! Why not let it be someone who likes farming? By what objective measure is getting a college degree and going for a non-agrarian career better than farming?

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Making education god.

In Virginia, children still belong to the government, and parents do not have the right to educate their children unless they have what the State considers a sufficient education themselves. [Article] Virginia throws parents a bone and allows them access to the development of their children if they are enrolled in a course that the all-knowing and all-perfect State education system approves of. With all of the hoops Virginian parents are required to jump through to control the education of their own children, one wonders: what is the legal recourse that a parent has if the Virginia education system fails their child?
